location
The location of Global Switch in Amsterdam is on a network dense environment, in terms of both tranportation and fibre-wire infrastructure. The existing former typewriter factory is re-used and forms the heart of the new developments.
design
The first phase completes the corner of the existing building and becomes a part of the existing structure by continuing the materialization. It is logistically connected to the existing data center and provides netto 1.100 m² of additional white space and circa 500 m² of plant room and technical area.

assignment
Global Switch is a technical real estate company was established in 1998. The company is globally one of the largest providers of data center space. The data center of Global Switch in Amsterdam is already the largest carrier-neutral data centers in the Netherlands. It currently has a gross area of circa 39.000 square meters, with a total of 25.000 square meters of server space.
Global Switch has a shortage of space for new tenants. It has therefore commissioned Knevel Architecten in collaboration with Househam Henderson Architects in London for the development of an extension on their current location.
The first phase of the extension is designed by Knevel Architecten and will hold space for a data center and a power plant. It has an average power density of 1.500 Watt / m². The target is to achieve a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1,25 and the best performance according to the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assesment Method (BREEAM).
