A new life for the Former Third Central Office
The former central office in Amsterdam for operating telecommunications will be given a new life. Remarkably, the building has two identities, each a different status. A national heritage at the Singel and a protected cityscape at the Herengracht. A new program most suitable for the historic building has yet to be decided.
The building, which is also known as the Third Central Office (in Dutch “Derde Telefoonscentrale”), is originally built between 1916 and 1919. A few decades later, the office wing at the Herengracht was demolished and replaced in 1955 by a new design by C. van der Wilk. Currently, these different phases are visible and represent the history of the central office.
