IKEA EINDHOVEN
expansion IKEA store and new parking
design
The expansion of the store asks for an increase of parking capacity for customers of IKEA. Therefore, a new build, 4-storey high car park is realized with 1500 parking spots. On the southeast side, two parts of the building are shaped following the smooth line of the highway. On the north side, the volumes connect to the urban structure of the surrounded buildings. The store and the car park enclose the open space between them in a surprising way. On the south side, the enclosure of the space is reinforced by the slope of the highway. This in between space is designed as a square for pedestrians containing a playground and several benches. The square is dynamic, caused by the movement of pedestrians between the elevator unit of the car park and the entrance and exit of the store. With a large window, the restaurant for customers is facing the square and the highway. The restaurant also gives view on the glass-coated stairwell of the car park and its spiral ramp.

assignment
The project consists of an extension and a new build parking garage for the IKEA store in Eindhoven.

location
The location is situated along the newly constructed highway A50, at the point where it connects to the John F. Kennedylaan. This is the main northern access to Eindhoven. The location is part of the business site Ekkersrijt, which is mainly retail oriented.

The space between the store building and the parking building is divided in two outdoor spaces and fit their surroundings by its dimensions and scales. Due to the spatial relationship with the surroundings and the connection with the various store functions, a valuable public space is created where the pedestrian is the protagonist. This public space has the potential to develop into a vibrant commercial center, both day and night, in the periphery of a large city.
