RESIDENCE
new development in Zaandam
location
The Zuiddijk is part of Zaandam and can be seen as a piece of a ribbon build environment. This way of ordering buildings is characteristic for villages in the landscape of the former Waterland. In the past, this landscape was used as peat fields for mining. The dwelling forms the end of an amorphous row of houses, at the corner of the Zuiddijk and the Troelstralaan.
Because of its corner position, the dwelling has three visible and representative facades. The front facade is by means of its composition and window sizing a continuation of the buildings along the Zuiddijk. The facade along the Troelstralaan introduces a “fenêtre and longueur” according to Le Corbusier. The privacy in the dwelling is maintained by the high position of the horizontal window. The third facade is facing the garden and provides openness, space, light and air by its transparent character.
"Partheon Architectuurprijs Zaanstreek 2007" nomination:
Jury:
prof.ir. Hans Ruijssenaars, Architect
Els Veenis-Kaak, Councillor
Eric Klarenbeek BA, Designer at foundation “Gedachtegoederen”
ir. Remco Reijke, Urban designer
Wesley Tax Bsc., Chairman of foundation “Zience”
Jury report:
"The jury highly appreciates the dwelling because of the successful solitary character of the project. The dwelling is nicely placed in the street and its surroundings; an unsuspecting passerby probably wouldn’t notice the new dwelling. The modest coherence in the design is highly commended. In addition, the building is considered as typical ‘Zaans’ and thus valuable noticed by the jury. The combined living/working function makes this property more than a ‘normal’ house. The front facade is stylish, the back facade dares to be open and the side facade shows a high horizontal strip. The jury finds the transition from side facade to front facade somewhat blunt. The roof is there to smuggle away this incoherence. The jury is pleasantly surprised by the fact that a small building like this could be so special. This requires an unique power of thinking."

assignment
The assignment concerns the construction of a dwelling for a private client along the Zuiddijk in Zaandam, the Netherlands.

design
The dwelling has a mansard roof shape, which is a very common roof type in the region. The originally (symmetrical) roof type is somewhat distorted and unbalanced. This is to express the angular position of the house and to give a counterbalance to the composition of the building mass attached to the dwelling. Each level of the dwelling has an identical floor plan consisting a freestanding, functional core containing the bathroom and kitchen or storeroom. This guarantees maximum flexibility in usage.
