assignment
The assignment includes a significant extension of a small house in Ermelo.

design
Because the clients sympathy and devotion for the current house a completely rebuild house was the last resort to realise the program. This starting point defined the design brief: ‘demolition is a sign of weakness’. This is the reason to find a syntheses between the existing and new building in the program and in the architecture. A balance between presence and reticence is researched in the position and shape of the new building.
The extension distinguishes two formulas: On the North Side an inward two story block with garage, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. On the South side, below the gentle sloping roof, a volume more outwards with a living room and an elevated dining podium, which overlooks the garden and the street. An open split level connection relates the dining to the living room. The upper floor of the two-story block is located on the same level as the dining room.
The existing entrance will be remained as the formal entrance. The connection between the existing house and the new volumes are entirely executed in glass walls and ceilings.
