CARE FACILITIES NIEUWE-TONGE
urban plan
location
The location is almost entirely surrounded by private gardens. The adjacent properties are partly houses descended from the 20th century and partly terraced houses descended from the ‘50’s.
The area is arranged in such a way that the existing urban structure will be completed by the proposal. A central formal public space is created where the main entrances of the apartments and facilities are located also. The current alley leading to the core center of the village will be used to slow traffic down and to implement new buildings. The building structure is intersected by an existing water stream which runs diagonally through the project area and connects formal as well as informal public spaces. This stream is extended to the communal courtyard of the apartments. Along the water, a pedestrian path is created with an informal route containing a sequence of several atmospheres.

assignment
The assignment concerns an urban proposal, for the implementation of care apartments, family houses, a new-built parsonage, a physiotherapy practice and a library for the village of Nieuwe-Tonge in the Netherlands.

design
The proposal suggests to orientate the entrances of the care apartments towards the street to give formal and vibrant quality to the public space. By doing this, a traditional elderly care facility is transformed into an apartment building where residents largely remain independent and are still able to make use of care provision. To encourage the liveliness in the central public domain, new connections are made on a logistic level to intertwine the location with its surroundings.
