38 DWELLINGS ABOVE PRIMARY SCHOOL
new development in Amsterdam
assigment
The assignment concerns a combination project of a primary school of 16 classes with 38 dwellings in the district of Zeeburg in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The project is situated at the head of a closed building block. The former school formed the end of the building block. Rebuilding a new school would not achieve enough height for the building block. By this reason, the urban designer of the district decided this project should be a combination project.
As a freelance designer at Architectenbureau Hans Wagner, a contribution is made to this design.

The zoning plan gave assignment to restore the city walls of the building block. Next to this, the plan gave the opportunity to create an accent in the project by adding a tower. The dwellings are located at the part where the tower covers the project. The elevator provides access to both the dwellings in the tower as well to the galleries of the houses above the school. The floor plans of the dwellings are determined on the planning grid of 9,6m x 9,6m. For the structural construction, there has been chosen for a solution where the supporting structure of the dwellings through columns and plates is put into the foundation. The first two floors of the school have a high degree of flexibility.
