IKEA AMERSFOORT
new IKEA store
location
The location is within the business park Vathorst on a junction of highway and railway. This junction is mentioned as ‘the knot’ in the urban plan of Kuiper Compagnons.
Most clients will approach the location from the Guldenweg, where they are lead to the car parking underneath the store.
To meet the urban plan the building is primarily oriented on the Valutaboulevard. The facade on this side expresses itself as the front of the building. At the same time it doesn’t articulate any entrance signals because the store cannot be directly accessed from the side of the Boulevard. The accesses of the building are located underneath the shop and are visible and accessible from the car parking.

assignment
The project concerns a new IKEA store in Amersfoort.

design
To accommodate all the programmatic elements including the parking, the choice has been made to elevate the store above a double layered parking garage. This results in a significant height of 19 meters.
The supply of goods will take place on the side of the highway. Loading and unloading will visually be hidden by a diffuse screen with a vegetated plinth. The screen consists of expanded metal in the IKEA blue colour and is equipped with a yellow IKEA wordmark. The use of colour and the diffuse nature of the screen forms a unity with the IKEA building.
