location
The front of the store is oriented to the N128 (Antwerpseweg) and is closely located to highway A76. A railway runs along the rear of the building. The IKEA store is part of a furniture mall.

A horizontal character of the building is provided by the large size of the main volume. An elevator block of the car park is placed as an autonomous volume in front of the store. This building component is a vertical interruption in the horizontality. From an urban perspective, a physical and visual east-west connection is located in front of the store. This is a pedestrian route connecting with the furniture mall.

assignment
The assignment concerns the extension of the existing IKEA store in Heerlen. Besides the extension of the store, the program includes an addition of a parking garage.

design
The extension from 20.000 m² to 38.000 m² has taken place on two sides of the existing store and is executed in three phases. By extending the store, the complete layout is transformed. The required number of parking is increased by enlarging the retail area. A solution is found in a double layered parking garage on top of the warehouse. During the construction period the store remained open.
