location
In the middle of the urban area south of Amsterdam is a green polder landscape around the river Amstel. Along the west side of the Amstel, the Amsteldijk, is a 'ribbon' of freestanding villa's. With the river as their 'frontyard', and the Dutch polder landscape as their 'backyard'.

design
The house owner asks for a house with a strong and modernized identity. At the same time the house should be fitted in its surroundings in a restrained manner. Solving this paradox is the first challenge of the design. The second challenge is to fit the program within the maximum allowable volume, without making a massive object.
The concept consists of a solid basement, which is rooted in the dike. Upwards, the mass becomes more narrow and will function as a load bearing core. In the basement the garage and a fitness is located. The core, where the lift and the stairs are located, supports three stacked volumes where in between the different rooms are situated. The spaces between the volumes will be executed transparently with glass. The volumes are articulated by different sizes and a shift between the volumes.
