Knevel Architecten was commissioned by AIK to produce a draft design for the renovation of the Berlage Huis which is a listed building in The Hague.

The Berlage Huis
The Berlage Huis is a listed building which was designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage and opened in 1927. One feature of Berlage’s approach was that he took into account the fact that the building might be extended, both horizontally and vertically. Therefore a quarter of a century later, when the building came to be extended the work was able to be carried out without any problems based on the planned designs.
design
Knevel Architecten plans to renovate the Berlage Huis and turn it into a multifunctional building that can be used as a business incubator. The starting point is for the ‘shell’ to have a simple and modern design in order to provide as much space as possible for different and changing office concepts. Consequently, there is space for both flexible workstations, fixed workstations, individual ‘boxes’, etc. and also for different functions such as a restaurant, lounge, gym and meeting rooms.
The openness of the current building, with its patios and double-height spaces, will be retained and enhanced where possible. That way, the building will suit its new function as a business incubator – for which the exchange of knowledge is of fundamental importance – perfectly.
