STUDENT HOUSING DELFT
competition
location
The location for the new student housing complex is along the Balthasar van der Polweg, which is a green axis according to the urban masterplan for the area. On this green axis, its character shall be further strengthened by the design. The TU campus is designed as an interplay between houses, university buildings and community facilities. The typology of the designed building gives an appropriate response to the urban masterplan, particularly by emphasised relationship between the building and ground level.
A “cycle stage” serves as an extension of the building and is directly related to the public space. To make hybrid use of the stage, it is oversized in its dimensions. The specific connection between the building and the public domain, gains a strong integration of the building in relation to the campus. The cycle stage forms the entrance for students who arrive by bike. Next to this, collective functions and communal rooms are located on the ground floor of the building. On the rooftop there is a large communal, green terrace.

assignment
The assignment concerns a competition for the design of 146 student houses on the campus of the TU Delft in the Netherlands.

design
The design is based on a system of prefabricated student units which are developed by the (construction) company Plegt-Vos. The design takes into account the linearity of the green axis and the adjacent student complex of Carel Weeber.
Because of the repetition of the units, a monotone image will be prevented by applying a strong architectural expression. A horizontal continuity and expression in the facade is provided by a continuous surface division of windows and cladding, which is strengthened by horizontal profiles.
